The Tompkins Family

I will try to cover the ancestry of our Tompkins family in three posts.  The first post will cover generation 1 through 5, from Ralph (1585 - 1666), the first of our line to settle in the U.S., through John Tompkins (1696 – 1802).  These are the early years in the U.S.  The second post will cover generations 6 through 9, from John Roger Tompkins (1758 – 1833) through James Bedford Tompkins (1866 – 1957).  These are the Canadian years.  The last post will be about Harold Frederick Tompkins, my grandfather.  These are the years when our Tompkins family returned to the U.S.  

The documentation supporting our relation to the first 5 generations is from information on the web posted by others.  The links between these generations and generations 6 through 10 needs to be confirmed.  Generations 6 through 10 are supported by:

Ralph Tompkins (1^stGeneration)

Ralph was born around 1585 in Monington, Herefordshire, England.  He married 1^st Nov. 8, 1608 Katherine Foster (abt. 1577 – 1635).  He immigrated to (probably Dorchester, MA) U.S. leaving England on September 19, 1635 on the ship Truelove with his wife Katherine and three of his children, Samuel (22), Elizabeth (18), and Marie (14).  Katherine died shortly after arrival in the U.S. in 1635.  Ralph remarried Hannah Aborne in 1635, Bridgewater, MA, USA.  He lived in Milford, CT, USA for a short period around 1639, as well as Salem, MA, USA (around 1642 – 1666).   After Ralph’s 2^nd wife died in 1666 Salem, MA, he probably moved to Bridgewater and lived a short while with a son where he died Nov. 12, 1666.

Ralph and Katherine had 6 children:

John B. Tompkins (2^nd Generation)

John was born about 1608 in Buckinghamshire, England.  He married 1^st Margaret Goodman (1612 – May 18, 1672) on Aug. 27, 1632 in Edlesborough, Buckinghamshire, England at St. Mary the Virgin church.  He, Margaret, and Nathaniel immigrated from England to the U.S. before 1636 as he is listed in Salem, MA records in 1636.  He was a farmer (yeoman).   Besides living in Salem, MA, he lived in Fairfield, CT, USA around 1649 and moved back to Salem, MA where he died on June 23, 1681.  In September 1673 John married 2^nd Mary Read.

John and Margaret (Goodman) had 11 children:

John Tompkins (3^rd Generation)

John was born abt 1644 in Salem, MA.  He married Rebecca Knight June 26, 1672 in Salem, MA.  Rebecca was born March 7, 1642 in Salem, MA and died January 8, 1688 in Salem, MA.  John died May 4, 1702 in Orange, NY.

John and Rebecca had 11 children:

John was born in 1670 in Salem, MA.  He married Hannah Barton about 1696 at Waterbury, CT.   Hannah, daughter of Elijah Barton, was born in 1672 in Eastchester, NY.  Edmund died June 5, 1719 in Eastchester, NY. 

Edmund and Hannah had 10 children:

John Tompkins (5^th Generation)

John was born in 1696 in Westchester, NY.  He married Jemima (?).  Jemima was born in 1698.  John was a Loyalist and emigrated to New Brunswick, Canada with his sons in 1783 after the Revolutionary War.  He died September 7, 1802. 

John and Jemima had 7 children:
